Early Years / Milestones

From a mere representative agent in 1949 the SGS Philippine operation was organized as a branch office in 1978, carrying the name SGS Far East Limited. SGS Philippines started its verification services with the inspection of agricultural and mineral products, complemented by laboratory testing services.

In 1985 the Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme (CISS) contract was awarded to the company where all imports into the Philippines were inspected at origin by SGS. With the government contract the SGS Manila Liaison Office (SGS MLO) was established to handle administration and relations with the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

Other milestones included the incorporation of SGS Guam and the Philippine Testing and Control Services, Inc. (a domestic subsidiary) into the Philippine operation in 1989 and 1990 respectively. In the same year the SGS Consumer Products Laboratory was established, testing products like garments/textiles, toys, electronics, ceramics and other consumer goods.

The 3rd core service of SGS was introduced in 1993 with the provision of ISO 9000 certification, the same year when Cebu Laboratory and Subic operations started.

Presently SGS Philippines holds its main office in Makati City, with branches in Cebu City Bataan, and SGS Guam. The company employs 150 full time professionals and experts.
